Slovenia (Interrail Countries)

Slovenia is a country in Central Europe that lies in the eastern Alps at the northeastern end of the Adriatic Sea. Its neighbors are Austria to the north, Italy to the northwest, Hungary to the northeast and Croatia to the south. Despite its small size, Slovenia has a surprising variety of terrain, ranging from the beaches of the Mediterranean to the peaks of the Julian Alps.

Country characteristics

Slovenia is a green and diverse country that lies between the Alps, the Mediterranean, and the Pannonian plain. Slovenia makes a great tourist destination, if only for the natural attractions: mountains, lakes, rivers, waterfalls, forests, caves, hills, plains, thermal springs and the sea.

Furthermore you can enjoy interesting cities and villages, coastal summer resorts and health spas, winegrowing hills and friendly "gostilnas" with home cooking. But also casinos and special events, sports, recreation, culture, castles and churches, museums and galleries, past and present at the crossroads of time...

From the capital Ljubljana, with its Baroque and Art Nouveau monuments, you can be in the heart of the Slovene Alps in an hour. A trip by car to the remarkable karst cave at Postojna takes only half an hour. In two hours you can be on the Adriatic coast, and to reach the lovely Pannonian plain takes no more that three hours driving. The primeval forests in the south are only an hour away.
